Our Group

Capricorn Coast Landcare Group is a group of environmental volunteers working in partnership with the community and government to promote wise management of our land, water and living natural resources for the benefit of all through on-ground projects and educational activities.

The group is involved in projects throughout the Capricorn Coast in Central Queensland’s Fitzroy Basin region. Our office is located in the coastal town of Yeppoon.

Landcare encourages land users on a group basis to take responsibility for local problems and to undertake projects to address identified problems. Through Landcare, everyone can be involved in combating land degradation and water pollution by adopting sustainable land management practices. Membership is open to all members of the community:

  • Urban Land holders
  • Hobby & small block land holders
  • Primary producers
  • Local authorities
  • Primary & secondary schools
  • Young & not so young

Landcare

The term "Landcare" is most frequently used to mean a network of people who are working towards sustainable natural resource management - that is, managing soil, water, and vegetation so they are available for use in the future.

Landcare groups are formed by people with a common concern about the quality of the land and water in their local area. Landcare groups undertake a wide range of activities including on-ground works, research, education and community awareness.

Landcare groups also provide a valuable social network.

Capricorn Coast

Set on the Tropic of Capricorn in Central Queensland, the Capricorn Coast is an undiscovered gem. With an average daily temperature of 25 degrees Celcius, the Capricorn Coast is a haven for long days in the warm sun all year round.

Pristine coastline stretching 95 kilometres from Stanage Bay to the mouth of the mighty Fitzroy River is speckled with small townships, beautiful beaches, fantastic fishing and much more. The coastal life would not be complete without the amazing Keppel Islands, a mere 30 minutes by boat, off the coast of Yeppoon.

This biologically diverse area is part of the largest undeveloped regions on the Australian East Coast and includes barramundi breeding grounds in Ramsar Wetlands around Corio Bay. The region's major waterway, Waterpark Creek, is host to ancient and towering remnant rainforest with many resident birds and animals.

About Us

The Capricorn Coast Landcare Group was founded in 1987 to address Landcare issues in the Fitzroy River coastal catchment. This group of enthusiastic volunteers from diverse backgrounds care for our land and water along Queensland’s Capricorn Coast. We have members from urban and rural environments that assist to educate our community on more sustainable land management practices and implement on-ground action to tackle land degradation. So not only do we spread the word about Landcare, we also get out there and do something for the good of the community and the environment.  Our projects include:
  • Junior landcare
  • Community information & resource centre :- Envirolink
  • Land rehabilitation (salinity / erosion / weed removal / revegetation)
  • Creek restoration
  • Seed collection & native plant propagation
  • Water quality monitoring & education
  • Wetland discovery days
  • Weedbuster workshops
  • Healthy Catchment education program
We work in partnership with the local council, NRM organisations and other conservation & community groups.
